How to Register and Prepare for the IMLE: Step-by-Step Guidance

Writer: Dr. Yasmin Abo Seef

Preparing for the Medical Licensing Exam (IMLE) can feel like a big task — especially for international medical graduates (IMGs) navigating new systems and requirements. Understanding how to register correctly and how to study efficiently can save you months of confusion and stress.

In this blog, we’ll walk through the registration process, required documents, and how to build an effective preparation plan using Brocali’s IMLE programs.

ree

Step 1 – Confirm Your Eligibility

Before registering, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements set by the Ministry of Health.

You’re eligible to sit for the IMLE if you are:

  • A citizen or resident who completed medical studies abroad.

  • A foreign-trained doctor applying for local medical licensing.

You may be exempt if you graduated from a medical school that has a direct recognition agreement with the Ministry (often from EU or OECD countries) or if you’ve completed a recognized specialty program abroad.

Step 2 – Prepare the Required Documents

Before you start your application, gather everything in one organized folder (both printed and scanned).

You’ll need:

  • A copy of your medical degree from a recognized university.

  • Official transcripts or internship records.

  • A copy of your passport or ID.

  • The application form (available on the Ministry’s site).

  • Proof of payment for the exam fee.

Tip: Submit only certified copies or officially translated documents if not originally in Hebrew or English.

Step 3 – Submit Your Application

Once your documents are ready, submit your application to the Professional Examinations Unit under the Ministry of Health.

You can find the updated forms and deadlines here: IMLE Exam Information.

  • The exam is held twice a year — typically in February and September.

  • Registration usually opens around three months before each session.

  • Late submissions are not accepted, so make sure to register early.

Step 4 – Understand the Exam Format

The IMLE consists of two main components:

1. Written Exam (MCQ-based)

  • Around 180–200 questions covering Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Psychiatry, and Public Health.

  • Questions are presented as clinical vignettes that assess reasoning and decision-making.

2. Practical Exam (OSCE-style) (required for some candidates)

  • Tests your ability to perform physical examinations, communicate findings, and apply clinical judgment through simulated cases.

Language: The exam is available in Hebrew and, for eligible candidates, in English upon request.

Step 5 – Plan Your Preparation

Most candidates study for 6–12 months before the exam. Start early and follow a structured plan that balances content review with question practice.

Suggested timeline:

  • 6–8 months before: Review core topics systematically.

  • 3–4 months before: Focus on question banks and timed mock exams.

  • Last 6–8 weeks: Simulate exam conditions and strengthen weak areas.

Tip: Use a study calendar and track your progress weekly to build consistency.
